DEBUNKING COMMON MYTHS ABOUT BOTOX
Many new clients come into the clinic for their very first medical aesthetics treatment assuming neurotoxin will make them look “crazy” or “overdone.” Almost every consultation starts the same way: clients tell me they want natural-looking results.
DID YOU KNOW...
Most clients are surprised to learn that neurotoxin isn’t just a cosmetic treatment, it’s also a medication with many therapeutic uses. When I treat cosmetic concerns, I always take a conservative approach to dosing to create natural-looking results. I also schedule a two-week follow-up appointment to assess your results and make any small adjustments if needed.
5 COMMON BOTOX MYTHS
1. Botox will not make you look frozen
As medical practitioners, we understand the science behind neurotoxin and how to use it safely and effectively. Our goal is never to over-treat. Instead, we take a conservative approach to dosing, schedule a follow-up appointment two weeks after your treatment, and make any small adjustments if needed. We can always add more neurotoxin, but once it’s injected, we can’t take it away. That’s why we believe it’s always better to start conservatively and build on your results when necessary.
2. You should wait to get botox for when you have deep wrinkles.
Neurotoxin works by relaxing the muscles that create dynamic lines, the wrinkles that appear or deepen when you smile, frown, or raise your eyebrows. It does not erase static lines, which remain visible even when your face is completely at rest.
The longer you wait for dynamic lines to become static, the less improvement neurotoxin alone can provide. While neurotoxin can prevent those lines from becoming deeper and more permanent, it cannot erase established static wrinkles. Depending on their severity, you may need additional treatments, such as skin resurfacing, collagen-stimulating treatments, or dermal fillers, to achieve your desired result.
3. Botox is not preventative.
Yes, neurotoxin is absolutely preventative. By relaxing the muscles that create expression lines, neurotoxin reduces the repeated muscle contractions that cause dynamic lines to deepen over time. While the treatment is active, those muscles move less, which helps prevent dynamic lines from becoming permanent static lines.
When you stay consistent with your treatment plan and return for maintenance appointments every 3–4 months, you can significantly slow the progression of expression lines. Neurotoxin doesn’t stop the natural aging process, but it does help prevent repetitive muscle movement from etching deeper wrinkles into the skin, allowing you to maintain smoother, more youthful-looking skin over time.
4. Botox will make you look different if you stop getting it.
Stopping neurotoxin won’t make your wrinkles worse or cause your face to age faster. As the medication gradually wears off, your muscle movement returns, and your expression lines slowly reappear. Those lines typically return to the same stage they would have been without the treatment, they don’t suddenly become deeper because you stopped.
You may notice that you look less refreshed than you did while neurotoxin was active, but you won’t look unnatural or “bizarre.” The biggest difference is that your muscles regain their normal movement, allowing dynamic lines to form again. If you choose to stop treatment, your face simply resumes its natural aging process. There are no harmful effects from discontinuing neurotoxin, you can restart treatment at any time if you decide it’s right for you.
5. Botox is only used for cosmetic purposes.
Neurotoxin offers far more than cosmetic benefits. As a medication, it can also treat a variety of medical conditions, including chronic migraines, teeth grinding (bruxism), TMJ dysfunction, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and trapezius muscle tightness.
